Supercool bouncing camera could be a hit with rescuers

11/8/2012

Two enterprising former MIT grad students are making the pitch that a bouncing, baseball-size camera will be the next big thing in rescue robotics. Bounce Imaging’s founders say the relatively low-cost, spherical, camera-packing gadget they’re developing (which could use a name, we think) can be chucked into dangerous spots, like a smoke-filled room or an earthquake-toppled building, and wirelessly relay 360-degree panoramic images and other info to users' smartphones. Sounds cool, but the device still has one big drawback: there’s currently no way to easily retrieve it. “Excuse me, Mr. Armed and Dangerous Terrorist, can we please have our ball back?” probably not a great idea.
