Hope you've been saving, BP, because you now owe a record $4.5B fine

11/15/2012

Two years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, BP has agreed to pay the biggest criminal fine in U.S. history: $4.5 billion. Two employees will also face manslaughter charges. Eleven workers were killed as a result of the April 2010 explosion, when millions of barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over nearly three months — with catastrophic results for the Gulf's wildlife and ecology. These fines are in addition to a $20 billion fund the company established to manage damage claims relating to the spill, and additional future penalties are possible. Lucky for BP, then, that it has earned a profit of $43 billion in the nine quarters since the spill. [Source]
