Locked doors might have trapped victims in Brazilian nightclub fire

1/27/2013

After 232 people died in a fire at the Brazilian nightclub Kiss on Saturday night, officials now say that patrons might have been trapped in the club because the front doors were locked. The club’s DJ, Lucas Cauduro Peranzoni, denied the charges. Witnesses who escaped the inferno also said the club security staff tried to stop them because the guards initially believed the riot was an excuse to leave the club without paying. The guards could not see the dance floor, where the band's pyrotechnics reportedly began the blaze, and blocked the exit to the club by standing in front with their arms extended. However, according to one witness, the crowd began yelling "We're on fire! we're on fire!" and then knocked down the security guards and escaped into the street. [Source]
