Federal court to decide just how bad 'I (heart) boobies' bracelets are
8/17/2012It’s like the plot from a “Footloose” spinoff. Kids across the U.S. wanted to brandish their support for boobs in a show of solidarity, but a group of adults in one state wanted the jewelry banned for vulgarity. Two Pennsylvania middle-school students were suspended in 2010 for wearing breast-cancer fundraising bracelets that said “I (heart) boobies!” The school district declared “boobies” a vulgar term (yes, we’re living in the year 2012), but the students say the district’s actions violated their freedom of speech. A 14-judge Philly federal appeals court, which we hope employs more common sense than the school, will hear arguments from both sides at a yet-to-be-determined time. [Source]
