Article says hammers are deadlier than rifles, leaves out other guns

1/3/2013

The intrepid bloggers at Breitbart have a super-clickable headline today, one that announces more people are killed annually by hammers than by rifles. According to the FBI's annual crime statistics, that's a true statement, believe it or not (we didn't at first). But they're not including the biggest number on the bureau's carefully itemized homicide chart. In 2011, although there were 323 counts of death-by-rifle — and 496 people killed by hammers and other blunt objects — there were 8,583 firearm-related homicides. Gun killings made up 68 percent of the homicides in 2011. Sorry, Awr Hawkins, but your remark that "We face far greater danger from individuals armed with carpenters' tools" isn't entirely accurate. [Source]
