Garlic is at the smelly center of $13 million smuggling case

1/10/2013

Apparently anything — really, anything — can be valuable if you steal enough of it. Two Britons are now being sought for smuggling Chinese garlic into Sweden while managing to avoid a whopping $13 million in customs fees. The men shipped the garlic to Norway, where it arrived in the country officially "in transit," which meant that customs duties weren't yet due on the massive delivery. The duo then stole the garlic and drove across the Swedish border. Apparently smugglers seek out Chinese garlic because it's less expensive than local varieties. In any case, the two garlic-loving crimincals are still on the run. [Source]
