In extreme capitalist move, Cadbury now owns purple

10/2/2012

Lords of industry around the globe own copyrights and trademarks on inventions and cool products, but Cadbury has them all beat, claiming its very own color. Yes, a court in the U.K. has ruled that Cadbury can trademark Pantone 2685C purple – that distinctive shade on its wrappers. Sure, Cadbury's been wrapping chocolate in the vibrant purple since 1914, but if you're wondering how anyone can own a color (or are hatching plans to ™ your own), note that Nestle fought hard against the decision, but lost in the end. And don't worry, cops won't come running next time you wear your electric purple disco pants – the ruling only applies to milk chocolate bars and drinks. [Source]
