A transgender high school student who applied to Smith College received her application back in the mail, along with a letter informing her that she did not qualify for admission. Why? Smith College is a women's college, and in her home state of Connecticut, Calliope Wong is not legally considered female. Smith does welcome transgender students; however, the applicants must be legally female at the time of admission. Their gender status before or after does not matter. In order for Wong, who says she has identified as female for years, to be recognized as such in Connecticut, she would have to undergo sexual confirmation surgery. Wong wrote on her blog that she is just a girl who "wants her fair shot at Smith." [Source]
