One of America's most dangerous cities loses its police force
8/27/2012One of America’s more dangerous cities — Camden, NJ — has lost its police department. If this sounds not entirely unlike that "Hampsterdam" season of "The Wire" (in which authorities effectively ceded control of a chunk of Baltimore to the drug trade), the reality isn't quite as dramatic. The city will now be protected and served by members of the non-union Camden County Police. Proponents of the strategy say it's an effective cost-cutting move, but the former Camden police beg to differ: They say it's a brutal (and successful) effort to bust the police officers' union and deny them collective bargaining leverage.
