Florida hate-crime victim had a gun — he just chose not to use it
1/6/2013With the recent publicity surrounding gun violence, many gun supporters have argued that if the victims had guns of their own, such violence would never have occurred. So what happens when the victim has a gun, but chooses not to use it? That was the case for Cameron Mohammed of Pasco, Fla., who was shot at close range with a pellet gun in a Wal-Mart parking lot. His girlfriend is white, and the shooter assumed Mohammed was Middle Eastern or Muslim. (Mohammed's parents are actually from Trinidad.) According to Mohammed, who had a licensed firearm at his side but refused to use it, "I couldn't blow this guy away for something he could change later in life. I'm not going to decide this man's fate." [Source]
