New Mexico lawmaker wants to criminalize abortion in rape cases
1/24/2013New Mexico State Rep. Cathrynn Brown is getting a lot of attention for her suggestion on how to deal with rape victims who have abortions: Send them to jail. Under a bill the GOP legislator introduced, a woman who has an abortion after being raped would be charged — along with her doctor — with evidence tampering. The charge carries up to three years in prison. Brown says the purpose of the bill is to strengthen laws that deter sex offenders, but she doesn't explain how that's supposed to work. "The bill turns victims of rape and incest into felons," complained Pat Davis of ProgressNow New Mexico, calling the bill "blatantly unconstitutional." And probably unpassable, as well: Democrats control both the arms of the New Mexico legislature. [Source]
