Study confirms cell phones make us insensitive monsters

9/5/2012

We’ve all been hanging with friends at a bar or restaurant and, along with plates and drinks come the ubiquitous cell phones. But just the sight of a phone can dampen your good time. At least that’s the finding of a new study that looked into how cell phones affect our interpersonal interactions, showing that simply having a phone present can get in the way of our attempts to connect with each other. This is particularly true when a topic was intimate or personal -- subjects reported feeling less trust and felt their partners showed less empathy with a phone present, implying that phones remind us of the people we aren’t connecting with.
