Cheerleaders go to court to display religious banners at games
9/22/2012Cheerleaders in a small Texas town touched off a controversy when they began bringing large banners to football games bearing scripture and other religious-themed messages. For the past three weeks, the cheerleaders at Kountze High School, about 85 miles northeast of Houston, began carrying the banners onto the football field during games. After a complaint was made, the school's superintendent banned the banners, citing a 2001 Supreme Court decision barring religion from schools. Parents filed a discrimination suit, and the cheerleaders were granted a temporary injunction against the ban, allowing them to continue using the banners. A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 4. [Source]
