Parking meters in downtown Chicago are most expensive on the continent

Congratulations, Chicago! For yet another year you have the most expensive parking meters in North America! As of Jan. 1, the windy city will proudly boast downtown meters that charge $6.50 an hour — up from $5.75 in 2012. It will be the fifth straight year of the parking rate rising and the final "automatic hike" under the city's 75-year contract with Chicago Parking Meters LLC. That contract was signed in 2008 under former Mayor Richard Daley, in return for a $1.1 billion payment from the parking meter company, which is mostly gone. [Source]
