Chicago reports 500th homicide for 2012, but then backs off [UPDATED]
12/28/2012It's been a tough year for Chicago. The windy city officially recorded its 500th homicide in 2012. The shooting death of a 40-year-old man came just hours after police announced Chicago was one homicide away from the tragic mark. This marked the first time since 2008, when 512 people were killed, that Chicago reached 500. However, it was only for a few hours. On Friday, Chicago police released a statement calling their own statistics inaccurate. After a recent autopsy ruled a 57-year-old man’s death "inconclusive," the confirmed homicide number dropped to 499. In 2011, police recorded 431 homicides in Chicago, second behind New York City's 515. [Source]
UPDATE: Late Friday, Chicago police confirmed that the city had officially tallied its 500th homicide.
