Chimp mom heartbroken after her baby is killed at zoo

LA Zoo's beloved chimpanzee Gracie is grieving after her 3-month-old baby was snatched by a male chimp and mauled before a horror-struck audience of zoo visitors yesterday. One observer claimed the adult male snatched the little infant from its mom, and another tweeted, "Not quite sure what happened another chimp started throwing the baby around." Gracie and the baby's grandmother spent the night in a private room, holding vigil over the dead infant. "They're just quiet," said zoo director John Lewis. "We can't really understand what their thought process is, but we can see they recognize that the baby is dead." Zoo staffers are heartbroken -- she was the first LA Zoo chimp birth in 13 years.
