China wants to make it illegal to ignore your mom and dad

6/29/2012

When was the last time you visited your parents? Has it been a while? If you live in China, it might soon be illegal to go without paying mom and dad a visit. After a survey revealed that more than 33 percent of people had only visited their parents once in the last year, Chinese lawmakers began voicing plans to amend the country's elderly rights law to make it mandatory for children to visit or "send respects to" their parents. A clause would make it illegal for people to "neglect or cold-shoulder elderly people," but critics question how this could be enforced. Still, more than 42 percent of people think the law is a good idea, so call your folks now to get rid of that gnawing sense of guilt.
