Rival teams play to lose in Olympic badminton racket

8/1/2012

The Chinese and South Korean women’s badminton teams have been charged with displaying a less than admirable sense of sportsmanship, with all players accused of doing their best — to do their worst. Both teams had already qualified for the knockout stages, and both wanted to avoid playing China’s second highly-rated partnership in the next round. So they deliberately sucked: They went through 21 points without a single rally lasting more than three shots, and with eight serves going straight into the net. Even after officials had a quiet word with regard to the Olympic spirit, the standard did not improve and the crowd booed them off the court as the game wrapped up. They've since been charged by badminton's governing body (yes, there really is such a thing) for "not using one's best efforts to win a match." [Source]
