Chopper and plane collide in midair; everyone walks away

2/20/2012

Motorists on California's Highway 160 between Sacramento and Oakland last night may have seen a woman trying to flag down help, but most of them probably assumed she had a flat tire or had run out of gas. In reality, the 29-year-old had just crash-landed her helicopter about 50 feet from the road after colliding midair with a small plane. The unnamed chopper pilot was logging nighttime hours toward her pilot's license when her 2005 Robinson helicopter clipped a six-seat Beechcraft Bonanza about 8 miles from Rio Vista Municipal Airport, according to AP. The airplane pilot tried to make it to a runway, but came down in a nearby field with his one passenger on board. Incredibly, the only reports of injury are some cuts to the chopper pilot's hands.
