Church fires teacher for undergoing fertility treatment
4/25/2012A Catholic school teacher, who was fired and called a "grave, immoral sinner" for trying to get pregnant through in-vitro fertilization, is suing the school's diocese, claiming its decision amounted to unlawful termination. Emily Herx was a highly-respected literature and language teacher, but when she started asking for time off to receive fertility treatments problems arose. Herx, who suffers from a medical condition that causes infertility, was originally given the church's blessing to take time off, but when she requested time off for a second round of treatments, she was fired. School officials claimed the treatments would cause a "scandal" because it required the destruction of embryos, violating the Catholic church's teachings
