UK to legalize gay marriage (not so fast, Church of England)

12/11/2012

The United Kingdom just can't commit. France approved gay marriage one day after similar bills were passed in the U.S. (proving our long-standing theory that the French want to be just like us), and the U.K. government has announced it will also legalize gay marriage — but with the caveat that same-sex unions will be banned in the Church of England and the Church in Wales. The two dominant churches — the only ones over which the government has such legal authority — have "explicitly" stated strong opposition to gay marriage, so this is the government's way to "reassure" them they won't be forced to conduct same-sex ceremonies. The bill is scheduled to be introduced sometime next year. Talk about cold feet. [Source]
