Colombia miraculously escapes huge earthquake unscathed

9/30/2012

A massive earthquake struck Colombia on Sunday morning, a 7.1 magnitude event so powerful it was felt in neighboring Ecuador. Miraculously there's been no damage and no casualties reported. The quake had its epicenter 103 miles deep in Cauca, and while it was certainly felt, the country escaped disaster and the Pacific Warning Center reports that (thankfully) no tsunami is expected. Phew! Troublingly, this has been the fifth 7.0 magnitude quake across the world in the last 45 days. Maybe we all need to look at what Colombia is doing in terms of housing and adapt it to seismically volatile areas at home. [Source]
