Scientists: Small, fast comet (not fat, slow asteroid) killed dinos

3/23/2013

We can only guess what will cause the extinction of the human race, though we're betting on a combination of climate change, energy drinks and Kardashian overdose. What we ARE closer to understanding what happened to the dinosaurs. Some scientists are now convinced that a fast-moving comet — not an enormous, clunky asteroid, as others believe — killed them off. Researchers say that whatever celestial body created the Chicxulub crater in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula (widely implicated in the dinos’ demise) would only have been 3 miles wide, but that an asteroid that size wouldn't travel sufficiently fast to create the 110-mile-wide crater. However, a smaller, speeding comet would. Now you know. [Source]
