Computer glitch summons 1,200 for jury duty at once

5/4/2012

Jury duty is already a hassle, but a computer error made it an absolute nightmare for 1,200 people reporting to a courthouse in Auburn, Calif. After the computer mistakenly summoned them to appear at exactly the same time, the rush to the courthouse was so intense that it triggered a quarter-mile traffic jam along Interstate 80. It may, however, warm the civic-minded heart to learn that of the 1,200 citizens summoned, around three-fourths of them showed up -- proving that not everybody ditches jury duty. "We apologize profusely," court executive officer Geoff Brandt said of the error.
