Congress decides maybe pizza isn't a vegetable after all
5/24/2012The world laughed at us last fall when Congress declared pizza was a vegetable, but soon the snack might return to the "Amazingly Delicious Junk Food" list where it belongs. The SLICE Act -- that's School Lunch Improvements for Children's Education -- has been introduced to ensure pizza will no longer count as a vegetable in the federal school lunch program just because it's slathered with tomato paste. Luckily for lovers of greasy, cheesy pizza, it won't be banished altogether. "Pizza certainly has its place in school meals, but equating it with broccoli, carrots and celery seriously undermines this nation's efforts to support children's health," said the bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO).
