Police slam 'misinformation' about Newtown spread on social media

12/16/2012

Connecticut state police have vowed to prosecute anyone spreading "misinformation" about the Newtown killings on social media. Lt. Paul Vance condemned "people posing as the shooter in this case, posing using other IDs," and other social media fakes. We can all agree deliberately posting malicious falsehoods about such a tragedy is despicable, but when it comes to misinformation, professional newsgatherers haven't exactly covered themselves in glory either. Mainstream outlets have, at one point or another, wrongly reported the shooter's ID, his connection to the school, the fate of his father, his mother's connection to the school, his method of entry and the weapons used. Think before you post? Always good advice, Internet. [Source]
