Yeah so I didn't even notice anything about Gabby Douglas' hair. At all. I just saw her tumbling awesomely and badassingly. And whatnot.

8/2/2012Gymnast Gabby Douglas just won a gold medal -- but it looks like she can't catch a break on social media sites, where some users have taken her to task for her hairstyle, invoking complex and sensitive issues around African-American women and hair. (Sidenote: How anyone can criticize Douglas without spending a lifetime deconstructing the barrette crimes committed by the Russian women's team is beyond us.) Blogger Monisha Randolph defended Douglas on her site, Sporty Afro: "From what I am reading on Facebook and Twitter, many African American women who are SITTING and WATCHING Gabby compete believe her hair is not 'kept.'" Hearteningly, though, the overwhelming majority of responses on Twitter, at least, have come out swinging in favor of the 16-year-old athlete doing whatever she likes with her hair -- and concentrating on her actual accomplishments.
