Couple drives 1,626 miles on a single tank of gas

​The Volkswagen Passat TDI is rated by the EPA at 43 miles to the gallon but mileage, as they say, may vary -- especially if you're Helen and John Taylor, who recently drove 1,626 miles (from Virginia to Texas) on a single tank of gas (19.322 gallons of diesel) in that car. This isn't their first rodeo: The Taylors teach workshops on achieving high fuel economy and claim 46 mileage records between them. They advise that to save on gas you keep your tires properly inflated, make sure the fuel cap is screwed on tight to avoid evaporation, and practice slow and steady driving -- no aggressive acceleration or braking.
