High school student defends poem on Sandy Hook shooting
12/31/2012A California high school student has been suspended and is facing possible expulsion because of a poem she wrote following the Sandy Hook school shooting which includes lines like, "I understand the killings" and "I know why he pulled the trigger." Courtni Webb, a high school senior at Life Learning Academy near San Francisco, says the dark lyrics were meant simply as a commentary on society. She says she is drawn to darker forms of self-expression and has turned in poems about suicide before without repercussions. However, the school says it has a zero-tolerance response to threats of violence. [Source]

Does she have the right to self-expression, or do these lines go too far?
