No hounds here: Coyotes like to keep their relationships monogamous

9/26/2012

Coyotes take the "until death do us part" thing very seriously. Researchers studying 236 coyotes living in the Chicago area discovered that despite all the chances the animals had to, erm, sow their wild oats, no evidence was found that they had strayed from a chosen mate. They also found no evidence of one mate ever leaving another while the other was still alive. The findings were remarkable due to the fact that urban coyotes have high population numbers and have access to plenty of food, both of which are factors that contribute to unfaithful behavior in similar species, like foxes, who reseachers say are prone to getting it on with multiple partners.
