When Billy Crystal was tapped to replace Eddie Murphy as Oscars host, it was assumed he was a safe pick. After all, Murphy was originally a way to bring some edginess to the stodgy ceremony. Turns out Crystal produced his own uncomfortable moments. During his opening video montage, Crystal donned blackface to play Sammy Davis Jr. in a skit featuring Justin Bieber. After Octavia Spencer's Best Supporting Actress win, Crystal cracked, "When I came out of 'The Help,' I wanted to hug the first black woman I saw, which from Beverly Hills is about a 45-minute drive." The joke was met with minimal laughter, and Crystal smiled wanly and quickly moved on.
