An 1890s full-web workman baseball mitt used in a fraud (The New York Times, http://aka.ms/glovefraud)

Curse of Bambino extends to guy trying to sell fake glove

6/30/2012

Baseball lovers thought they were bidding on a glove that Babe Ruth once owned and loved so much that he slept with it under his pillow at the orphanage where he grew up. That was the story Irving Scheib, the guy selling the mitt, told. Scheib also said Ruth later bestowed the glove to movie star Robert Young, a close friend of the baseball legend (Scheib is married to one of Young's granddaughters). A compelling story — except that Scheib now admits he really bought the glove on eBay for about $750. The California man pleaded guilty Thursday to a wire-fraud charge, for which he might be sent to the real pen (not the bullpen) for up to 20 years.
