Cyberattacks on U.S. traced to a Chinese army building near Shanghai

2/19/2013

How do you say "Back off" in Chinese? After an in-depth study, the American computer security firm Mandiant has concluded that China's army is likely behind numerous cyberattacks on U.S. corporations, organizations and government agencies. The firm traced attacks conducted by a sophisticated hacking group known as Comment Crew to a 12-story building on the outskirts of Shanghai that is the headquarters of People's Liberation Army Unit 61398. The Chinese government has denied the allegations, calling them "unfounded" and "unprofessional," but the U.S. government will reportedly step up efforts to combat Chinese computer hacking, concluding that it has gone from merely annoying to highly dangerous, with our power grid, financial institutions and air traffic control systems in peril. Scary. [Source]
