Man who axed victim gets off, his shrink not so lucky

12/19/2012

Joel Gaillard of France was a longtime patient of psychiatrist Daniele Canarelli, but that didn't prevent him from killing an elderly man with an ax. Because of the "grave error" the doctor supposedly made by failing to recognize his potential for violence, a French court shockingly sentenced Canarelli to a year in prison and ordered her to pay more than $11,000 to the victim's children. "If a psychiatrist lives in fear of being sentenced, it will have very real consequences and probably lead to harsher treatment of patients," her lawyer said. In a cruelly ironic turn, Gaillard "was not held responsible" for the murder and will not face jail time. [Source]
