Highest-resolution camera ever could reveal secrets of the universe

9/18/2012

Are the secrets of the universe about to be exposed? The Dark Energy Camera, the highest-resolution camera ever built with a stunning 570 million pixels, puts that digital snapper you take on vacations to serious shame. The camera has already started snapping pictures of some 300 million galaxies as part of a project scientists hope will reveal the nature of the mysterious dark energy that makes up nearly three-quarters of our universe. The result of collaboration between astronomers in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, Spain and Germany, the Dark Energy Camera is mounted on a telescope in Chile and can capture images of cosmic objects as far as 8 billion light-years away. Smile and say cheese, alien beings! [Source]
