Sheriff says folks shouldn't settle for just calling 911 — get a gun
1/27/2013On Friday, residents of Milwaukee County got some advice they probably never expected. Sheriff David Clarke Jr. took out a radio ad telling residents, "With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option." Sounding less like a public-safety officer and more like Steven Seagal, Clarke’s ad said, "I need you in the game. … Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there." Wisconsin state law says that anyone using deadly force in the defense of their home or business acted reasonably, but even so, Clarke’s ad has drawn criticism from people who think that urging frightened civilians towards vigilante justice is not wise.
