Deaf twins euthanized, sparking sadness and renewing suicide debate
1/15/2013Months after a U.K. man pleading for euthanasia died of starvation, controversy has again erupted over a pair of deaf twins willfully put to death by lethal injection in Belgium. The unnamed, 45-year-old twin brothers, both deaf since birth, learned they were going blind and would never be able to see one another again. Instead, they opted for death, sparking a slew of intense reactions on Twitter. Many were outraged the government would allow them to die without any terminal illnesses or physical pain ("Deaf going Blind so they KILL THEM and it's OK?" said one user) while others found the move compassionate and dignified ("we should all have this right.")
