Woman says parking meters are bad for her health, sues city for $1.7B
8/17/2012Some people love the convenience of "smart" parking meters that are popping up in cities across the country. They allow people to pay with debit cards instead of having to lug around socks full of quarters. But a woman in Santa Monica, Calif., is suing the city for $1.7 billion (yes, with a B) because she claims the radiation from the meters' wireless signals is giving her ear infections, ringing in her ears and tightness in her neck. In addition to the massive lump sum, Denise Barton is also demanding $1.7 million per month as long as the meters are in use. City officials have said the signal from the meters is the same as that from a cell phone. [Source]
