Drill lands on patient's lung in ultimate dental nightmare
12/29/2012Here's a new dental nightmare to worry about: A dentist in Sweden was drilling into his patient's tooth when the approximately one-inch drill dislodged, fell down her throat, and landed on her right lung. After an emergency bronchoscopy, the 60-year-old woman was discharged from the hospital the next day and was fully recovered a month later. As utterly horrifying as this incident sounds to us, a spokesperson for the hospital exhibited some Scandinavian calm after outlining new procedures meant to prevent this from happening again: "Unfortunately, drills are going to be dropped every now and then."
