Diabetic alert dog saves toddler's life over and over
6/3/2012This diabetic toddler's life-saving blood sugar monitor doesn't have a screen or any fancy buttons, just a set of furry ears and a sweet grin. Ruby is a diabetic alert dog specially bred for scent. She can detect when her young owner's blood sugar has fallen below 100 because it smells faintly like ketosis (similar to nail-polish remover) due to metabolic changes. Since Ruby came into Faith Wilson's life, the 3-year-old's mom, Sarah Wilson, says the dog has saved her countless times by barking and licking frantically to alert others. The little girl has a rare type of infant diabetes, and Sarah says,"If it weren't for Ruby, I would have already buried my child."
Do you think dogs could be trained to help with more medical situations?
