Diphthong — for those of you whose vocabularies aren't up to scratch — is the name for a type of vowel sound that connects two vowels in a single syllable. It emerged the victor of a completely unscientific word-on-word showdown hosted by illustrator Ted McCagg, who spent weeks whittling down a long list of words starting with every letter of the alphabet.
