Discovery may lead to male birth-control pill

5/26/2012

Here's a significant development for sexual equality: Researchers have identified a gene that could lead to a male contraceptive pill. The gene, Katnal1, is critical for producing healthy sperm and interfering with it prevents sperm from fully developing. So far they've only succeeded in rendering mice infertile, but they're hoping to target the same gene in the human testes. One doctor says the search for a male contraceptive was the "Holy Grail" for drug research but emphasized that it's essential that the contraceptive be reversible. While men may balk at the idea of messing with genes for the sake of hanky-panky, don't forget that that science has been messing around with women's bodies for years.
