'Disruptive' teen suspended for anti-bullying video
5/23/2012When Jessica Barba, 15, was assigned a project on "an important issue" for class, the freshman chose to address bullying. The creative teen made a Facebook page for fictional student "Hailey Bennett," posting messages to make it appear Hailey was being tormented by classmates. Jessica also made a video about Hailey, noting at the end that she'd committed suicide. Both the video and Facebook page were labeled as fiction, but a concerned parent wasn't concerned enough to get the whole story and reported Jessica to the school. She was suspended for five days for "causing a disruption." Despite her punishment, Jessica believes in her message. "I feel very passionate about the topic ... [and] very proud of what I did," she said.
Did Jessica deserve a suspension?
