Everyone from our mothers to our dentists to lovable Muppets have championed flossing. However, new research apparently questions the efficacy of that "essential" dental tradition. This Discovery News video reviews studies that suggest there is virtually no difference between just brushing and brushing-plus-flossing in the fight against plaque and gingivitis, and any benefit that flossing poses was described as "weak" and "unreliable." However, it also mentions a possible reason why: We're all lazy flossers. When comparing children who flossed their own teeth daily to children who had their teeth flossed by a dental hygienist daily, the professionally flossed saw a 40-percent drop in the risk of cavities. So, floss if you like, but remember to dig deep!
