Sorry, cat people — dogs might actually be smarter than kitties

2/4/2013

Cat people have long used the good old "They’re smarter!" rationalization to justify their love of felines, but they might want to rethink that angle. New research indicates that dogs might be brighter than most of us thought — and the key to their smarts is their relationship with people. For instance, no other mammal can interpret human gestures (like when you point to a pup's ball to show him where it is) as flexibly as dogs. Research also suggests they have better memories than their kitty counterparts. And, of course, dogs are among a small group of critters (like dolphins and parrots) that can learn to respond to hundreds of spoken signals associated with different objects. Cats, watch your backs.
