Dog's starring role in musical could find him a new home

A lot of community theatre actors dream of making the leap to Broadway -- but for one star of "Annie" at the Spokane Civic Theatre in Washington, his biggest goal is finding a new home. Rescued from a local animal shelter, a shepherd-retriever mix named Sandy -- just like his canine character in the show -- will appear in the five-week run of the musical in the hopes that some soft-hearted audience member will adopt him. There may be one small hang-up, however: Val Hughes, the dog trainer who has supplied animals, including Sandy, for a number of shows, has already fallen for him. "I retain the right of first refusal," she said.
