$70 British Open bet nets gambler more than $30,000

7/23/2012

Victory in the British Open for Adam Scott seemed so secure Sunday that his name was stenciled onto the medal he would have received if he could have maintained any bit of his once-five-shot lead. But he couldn’t, and Ernie Els won his fourth major golf tourney. Somewhere in that last round, an online bettor decided to put $70 on a long-shot hunch that Els would somehow surpass Scott, something the rest of the golfing world didn’t see coming. To the risk-takers go the spoils. Whoever that bettor is, his or her wallet is now $32,830 fatter from the 469-to-1 gamble. That’ll buy a lot of fuzzy dice. [Source]
