Student banned from homecoming dance due to overdue library book

10/18/2012

You'd think a simple fine would have sufficed, but Florida high school freshman Dominique Stearns was banned from her first-ever homecoming dance because she had an overdue library book. Dominique, who had her new dress for the dance all picked out, was told when she tried to buy her event ticket at Cypress Lake High School that she wouldn't be allowed to attend. She offered to return the book right away (it had never been stamped with a due date), but to no avail. The apparently unsympathetic principal reportedly told Dominique's mom, Danielle Olmstead, that "there's always next year" for the dance. Olmstead is outraged, saying, "She's getting punished … for reading. It's ridiculous." [Source]
