Apparently without irony, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has advised the public to punish biased media outlets: “I think the American people have come to understand and accept and over time they tend to penalize, as they should. … They stop buying those newspapers, or they change their channel and go to a channel that they think is somewhat more balanced. And I think that’s a good thing.” Elsewhere in the interview with Steve Malzberg, Rumsfeld complained about the media “favoring the left” — so even though he invoked their “fair and balanced” tagline in his criticism, Rumsfeld was presumably not suggesting that the viewing public actually penalize Fox News.
