Done freaking out NY, 'suicide statues' scare people in Brazil
5/12/2012Lifelike statues that frightened New Yorkers when they evoked memories of World Trade Center jumpers have made their way to Brazil, with one newspaper dubbing them "suicide statues." The eerie sculptures, which are part of a display by British artist Antony Gormley, sit atop buildings throughout Sao Paulo. Their shadowy presence has caused concerned residents to call the police, fearing someone was about to jump. The work is meant to explore the relationship of the human body to space and Gormley said in 2010 that he never wanted to scare anyone, saying that "If people think of death and suicide, it's a sad reflection on evolution."
Do you think the statues are awful or artistic?
